Young driver caught going 110 km/h near Burlington school

A young driver going almost double the speed limit has been reined in by the long arm of the law in Burlington.

Halton police say the 18-year-old G2 driver was pulled over yesterday (Jan. 29) around 2:40 p.m. on New St. at Woodview Rd.

Reports say the driver was hitting speeds of 110 km/h in a 60 km/h Community Safety Zone.

Community Safety Zones (CSZ) are sections of roadways where public safety is of special concern and where higher collision patterns or vehicle speeds have been identified. These zones may include roadways near schools, daycare centres, playgrounds, parks, hospitals and assisted living residences.

In this case, the CSZ was near a school.

“Kids and parents from a nearby school watched the car taken away on a flatbed,” wrote police on a social media post. “(We received) Lots of Thank you’s.”

Police say the situation was particularly dangerous because there were a lot of pedestrians and cyclists in the area.

The motorist was charged with stunt driving.

Drivers caught driving 40 km/h or more above the speed limit where the maximum is less than 80 km/h will face stunt driving charges.

A minimum $2,000 fine can be issued along with six demerit points as well as a mandatory roadside licence suspension for thirty days.

Police generally do not release the names of those charged under the Highway Traffic Act.
