You can pet and interact with lambs at a huge new sheep farm that just opened in Halton Hills

If you’re an animal lover who is looking to enjoy a unique experience this summer, you might be excited to hear that the largest dairy sheep farm (which is located just outside of Mississauga) just opened its doors to the public.

OVINO, a new venture that will house over 2,000 sheep, just opened at 7323 25 Sideroad in Acton (a community in Halton Hills).

Jay Akras, Business Development Manager with OVINO, says that people are welcome to tour the facility on select days and interact with the animals.

People can also sample some food products made with sheep’s milk.

“People will be able to interact with the lambs and pet them,” Akras said in an email to insauga.com.

According to a news release, OVINO employs state-of-the-art feeding, bedding, and milking automation technologies. The facility says the sheep are milked twice a day in a rotary parlour that can milk up to 1,000 sheep per hour.

The sheep milk is then processed on-farm to produce fresh milk and yogurt.

“There is significant and growing demand for sheep milk from consumers that like its nutritional value, flavour, and digestibility,” Akras said in a statement.

Akras also said that OVINO products, which can be purchased on the farm, will soon be available in stores throughout Ontario.

“Unlike goat milk, sheep milk is similar to cow milk in flavour while being naturally creamier and sweeter. Sheep milk is also the perfect alternative for people who are lactose intolerant or who simply cannot drink cow milk. After all, nearly 70 per cent of the global population is lactose intolerant,” he said.

OVINO will be offering farm tours as well as sheep milk and sheep yogurt tastings every weekend from 9 am to 12 pm, starting June 12.

The tours are free and do not need to be booked in advance.
