It seems like the price to buy, own, or rent a home is constantly increasing throughout Halton. With that being said, it can be hard for some people to be able to live here comfortably.

In order to provide support to those who may need it, the Halton Region has a variety of affordable housing options and resources.

Housing options and resources available in Halton include the following:

Emergency Shelter:

The Halton Region has an Emergency Shelter program that provides temporary shelter and services to meet the needs of those who are homeless.

For more information about the region’s emergency shelter services visit the Halton Region website.

Subsidized Housing:

This program, according to the Halton Region, also known as rent-geared-to-income (RGI) provides well-maintained, and safe housing for families and individuals with moderate and lower incomes.

In order to apply for subsidized housing, residents must submit an application form to Halton Access to Community Housing (HATCH).

On the Halton Region website, there are many other resources that people can use when applying for subsidized housing including a database that can help identify which housing communities someone may like to include on their application form, and supportive housing/supports for daily living (person support and care for seniors).

Rent Supplement Program:

This program works to lower the cost of housing for qualified families and/or individuals in housing areas that are operated by the private sector.

The Halton Region website highlights, “Landlords sign an agreement with Halton Region to provide housing units to the Rent Supplement program and Halton Region places eligible applicants from the Halton Access to Community Housing wait list (HATCH) in the rent supplement units.”

Through this program, the housing subsidy provided is paid directly to the landlord.

Landlords who are interested in this program can apply here

Housing Supports:

The Halton Region also provides help to those who need mental health supports, assisted living, those who may have developmental disabilities, youth who cannot live with their parents (there are two programs in which the age ranges from 15 to 21-years-old), people who may have physical disabilities, and anyone who may require other assistance (including those who may be recovering from alcohol and drug addiction).

Halton Rent Connect:

Halton Rent Connect is a service that is provided by Halton Housing Help and supports renters during the process of finding and maintaining affordable rental housing in the region.

The service also works to help landlords market and/or fill their available vacancies.
