A man trying to avoid capture by police jumped into the lake to avoid an arrest.

Halton police say the incident occurred around 9:30 a.m. this morning (Dec. 27) at Spencer Smith Park in Burlington.

Police indicate the suspect was in breach of court conditions and allegedly was in possession of a stolen vehicle.

When officers arrived at the park they say the man jumped into Lake Ontario and tried to hide inside a large pipe.

After several hours, with the assistance of the Halton Police Tactical Unit, Hamilton Police Service’s Marine Unit, Burlington Fire Department, and Halton Emergency Services the man was taken from the water and arrested. He has since been taken to hospital and treated for hypothermia.

The name of the person charged has not been released.

The area of the park where the incident took place is now open to the public.
