Norovirus Burlington school virus sick

A virus that has taken hold of a Burlington school has made at least 65 students sick.

Officials with the Halton District School Board say the virus was discovered earlier this week at Dr. Frank J. Hayden Secondary School when several student absences were recorded.

The school has a population of 1,300

Reports now indicate the Norovirus is the likely cause, according to a board official.

Norovirus, also known as the Norwalk virus, is the most common form of severe stomach upset. Symptoms include diarrhea, vomiting and stomach pain.

The virus can spread from person to person or through contaminated food, water or surfaces.

Symptoms usually develop within two days of exposure and recovery can take up to three days with no lasting effects.

The school remains open but board officials said precautions are being taken to stop the spread of the virus such as warning students not to share food and drinks and to wash hands regularly.

The school is located at 3040 Tim Dobbie Drive.
