Two Halton police officers attacked in Ottawa, taken to hospital

Two Halton Regional Police officers, visiting Ottawa for a memorial honouring fallen Canadian officers, were attacked early Sunday morning (Sept. 24) heading back to a hotel they were staying at with their families, according to reports.

The incident, which occurred around 1:45 a.m. in the ByWard Market on the 1-100 block York St., left one Halton officer in the hospital with serious head injuries, while a second officer received stitches and was expected to be released.

The two Halton officers who were attacked were not in uniform and it’s unclear what the motive is at this time or if the attackers even knew they were members of the police.

Ottawa police confirmed the two men attacked were Halton Regional Police officers, but did not identify their names.

Reports say the officers were on their way back to their hotel when they were jumped from behind by several people carrying some kind of weapon.

Ottawa police announced Monday afternoon they have charged a man in connection with the incident.

Ottawa police have charged Mikkhul MILORD, 25, of Ottawa with two counts of aggravated assault. He is scheduled to appear in court this late afternoon.

Ottawa police are continuing the investigation. Further suspects may be identified and further criminal charges may be laid.

In an email to halton.insauga.com, Halton Regional Police said it was “not in a position to confirm details pertaining to the incident” and directed any further questions or details to the Ottawa Police Service.

Officers from across the country were in the National capital for the 2023 Run to Relay from Toronto to Ottawa and at Parliament Hill for the Canadian Police and Peace Officers’ 46^th annual memorial service for fallen officers.
