The long-awaited Wyecroft Road Extension and Bridge Project is on target for completion and with that will come a new east-west commuter route between Oakville and Burlington.

This week Halton Region provided an update on the $117-million project saying construction is on time and on budget and expected to be open for traffic in late 2026.

The project — which traces its origins back to 1994 — initially broke ground in 2023 and is purpose-built to connect two of Halton Region’s most vital municipalities over Bronte Creek.

“Like most major construction projects, we have experienced typical delays associated with ground conditions, buried utilities, and the weather, but we anticipate those and build those into our project timelines,” Jacek Pawlus, said project advisor, told INsauga.com via email.

Further details provided by Pawlus indicate the project has been designed with a commuter-first mentality, as several aspects incorporate separate lane use that alleviates traffic from local roads and on-road cycling lanes.

Additional features include a more consistent throughline to the Appleby and Bronte GO stations alongside central water main service to supply more consistent clean water to Oakville.

“This is a new connection that anyone travelling east or westbound can use and benefit from. Whether you are commuting to work, accessing retail, or if you are a first responder, this new connection provides another way to move through Oakville and Burlington,” said Pawlus.

However, any construction project in the GTHA comes with the concern of budget — but luckily — despite a decade-spanning timeline and a few bumps in the road, the Wyecroft Road Extension and Bridge Project has remained within the margins of its projected cost.

“We’ve invested $117 million to create this new connection. The project received approximately $53.11 million in funding from the Province. We are currently within the approved budget,” said Pawlus.
