Halton Region warns of three years of traffic delays, noise and overnight work as the next stage of construction work on Dundas Street through Burlington and Oakville begins.

This stage of the project, which will start this month and last until 2027, will take place between the area just west of Tremaine Road in Burlington and Bronte Road in Oakville.

The project is a priority for Halton as the area prepares for future growth and Dundas serves as a major east-west route.

More than 40,000 drivers use Dundas through Halton on a daily basis and when the entire project is completed (from Bronte to Kerns Road), significant changes will be made including the widening of the street to six lanes, the addition of sidewalks and pathways along the route, more traffic signals and street lights, and bike lanes.

As well, equipment for the Advanced Traffic Management System (ATMS) will also be installed. The ATMS is a traffic signal control system that enables real-time signal adjustments to save time, reduce emissions and improve safety for motorists.

The work is being carried out in three phases. Following this current phase 2 from Appelby Line to Northhampton Boulevard and Northhampton to Guelph Line is anticipated to begin in 2025. Phase 3 will see work done on Guelph Line to east of Kerns Road also beginning in 2025.

However, Halton indicates it won’t be business as usual for those who live near the construction area or use Dundas.

Although mitigation plans will be put in place, the impact of the construction will be as follows:

  • Driveway access: Direct access to driveways may be restricted for short periods. Advance notice of any planned restrictions will be given.
  • Dust and mud: There may be increased levels of dust and mud near the work site.
  • Erosion and sediment controls: Erosion and sediment control measures for the duration of the project will be installed, including a heavy-duty silt fence around the perimeter of the project site.
  • Lawn irrigation system: Those who have lawn irrigation systems within the public road allowance are being asked to disconnect and remove any sprinkler heads prior to the construction work commencing. Halton Region will not be responsible for damaging irrigation systems that are located within the public road allowance.
  • Mail delivery: No disruptions are anticipated for mail delivery.
  • Night work: Night work may be required as part of this project. Halton will provide advance notice of any change in work hours.
  • Noise: You may experience noise as a result of the work. Work will be scheduled in accordance with local noise by-laws.
  • Traffic delays: This work may cause traffic delays; lane shifts or lane restrictions. Emergency vehicle access will be maintained at all times.
  • Truck traffic: There may be occasional increases in truck traffic around the ongoing improvements.
  • Vibration: Some vibrations occur due to the work being done. As a precaution, it is recommended that you remove or secure objects on shelves and walls.
