Town of Oakville outdoor programs, facilities remain open despite air quality statement

While the poor air quality has resulted in the cancellation of all outdoor sporting activity for students in Halton District School Board (HDSB) schools on Wednesday (June 7), it’s all systems go for the Town of Oakville.

A special air quality statement was issued by Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) and the Ministry of Environment Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks (MECP) for parts of Ontario, including Halton Region due to smoke from forest fires in Quebec and Northeastern Ontario.

The fires have resulted in high levels of air pollution and the poor air quality is expected to persist into the weekend.

For now, outdoor sporting events and programs are still a go for Oakville.

“We are keeping outdoor facilities and programs open,” the Town said on Twitter. “However, if a person wishes to cancel, they will be able to do so without penalty.”

The HDSB announced today it was cancelling any sporting event that was to take place at both the elementary and secondary school levels in Burlington, Milton, Oakville and Halton Hills.
