Milton Council is set to review the Town’s fireworks bylaw at tonight’s meeting.

Town staff has been directed to revise the bylaw to prohibit and regulate the sale, storage, display and discharge of fireworks.

The revised bylaw would limit the days that fireworks are allowed to be discharged. This includes Victoria Day, Canada Day, the third day of Diwali and any day that a permit has been issued by the Chief Fire Official only.

This review follows a council meeting that took place back in the August, where staff were directed, by resolution, to look into options that would further regulate the sale and discharge of consumer fireworks in the Town of Milton.

While there are several municipalities that do not permit fireworks in their community, Milton’s bylaw is relatively consistent with the bylaws of other municipalities that permit fireworks.

Based on the direction of council, staff will prepare a revised bylaw for consideration in order to incorporate the recommendations that are presented.

Should Council vote to oppose the staff recommendation and wish to ban the sale and discharge of consumer fireworks in Milton, the following motion would need to be approved.

The motion would be that staff bring forward a bylaw to amend Fireworks By-law 37-2009 to ban the sale and discharge of consumer (family) fireworks in the Town of Milton.

Town council is set to discuss this further at tonight’s meeting which will begin at 7:00 p.m.
