Top 5 pizza places in Oakville

Pizza is one of life’s simple pleasures for its universal qualities — it’s easy to make, yet so convenient to pick up on your way home in Oakville. It’s not fancy, though it may try, on occasion. And it’s oh-so-satisfying. I’ve yet to travel to Italy, but when I do, you know what I’ll be eating 24/7. (Remind me to pack stretchy pants, would ya?!). Here are the top 5 pizza places in Oakville.
This sexy little Neapolitan wood-burning pizzeria boasts some really delicious food. Thin, pita-like dough is topped with sauce, fresh cheese and basil, and spicy salami. My pizza was a tad soggy in the middle and resembled pita bread more than pizza crust. The quality of the ingredients, though, made up for it. Dough is made with the finest “00” wheat flour imported from Naples and fermented naturally with an ancient slow-rising sourdough recipe, then baked for 60 seconds at 900 degrees in a traditional pizza oven built on-site by a third-generation artisan from Naples. Then there’s the atmosphere, which is oh-so-sexy when the lights are dimmed. Keep in mind, the kitchen shuts down one hour before closing. You’ve got to head to 7 and check it out.

This Kerr St. favourite has been wowing diners since 2004 … I had a feeling I’d love the Americana pepperoni pie just by its description. This thin-crust pizza comes topped with fire-roasted tomato sauce and mozzarella. Stoney’s pepperoni is amazing! The sauce is incredible and no extra toppings or condiments are necessary — not even hot sauce! It tasted so good I almost felt the need to go to confession.

The bread is freshly baked in-house and that salami … oh my. It just might be the best sliced meat I’ve ever tasted. This margherita pizza with spicy salami brought out my inner ninja turtle. This Bronte Rd. restobar, south of Lakeshore Rd., absolutely blew me away with their pizza, featuring fresh basil, fior di latte, and tomato sauce. It’s simplicity at its finest. (Pro tip: They serve pizza bread with the beet hummus — it’s phenomenal).

This cute bistro is a hidden gem when it comes to pizza. Located in downtown Oakville, the resto is inspired by piazza culture. With everything from cappuccino to handmade pizza, to wine, there’s something or everyone. My margherita pizza (plus calabrese) came with pomodoro sauce & fiore di latte topped with fresh basil. There was chilli oil, but I loved this pizza plain. Service is superb.

One bite made me forget I was in an outdated shopping mall most frequented by my mom (and other seniors) and students on lunch break. This pizza was sublime. Tavolo, a longtime favourite, has been wowing Oakville diners who typically frequent other fabulous restos owned by Catch Hospitality Group. Try flagging a server on a Sunday night — it’s insanely busy. The pizza alone was worth the wait – fresh, fresh, fresh ingredients and that combination of margherita pizza plus salami — duuuuuude.

Bonus: Peppino’s Oven
Hand-spun gourmet pizzas are served atop red and white checkered nylon tablecloths at this old-style cafe in the city’s north end along Kingsridge Dr. Sports jerseys dominate the decor, making it a great neighbourhood hangout if you want to watch the soccer game locally with fellow footie fans. The space offers tables and booths. When the server arrived with a stand yielding a pepperoni pizza, it was so greasy it reminded me of a date I went on with a guy in New York City. With a perfect super-thin crust and great blend of herbs, Peppino’s pizza is straight up awesome.
