Following what it considers are successful programs for seniors and youths, Burlington is looking to take the next step by offering free bus rides all the time for everyone.

A report to city council on such a program’s viability is expected by the end of the year, but in the meantime, Burlington is asking residents to weigh in on the future of transit.

The online survey can be found here.

A year ago, the city started letting those 65 years of age and older ride Burlington Transit for free. Teenagers can also ride for free outside of school hours, which is after 6 p.m. and on weekends.

During talks for the elimination of fares for seniors and youth, city officials have made it clear that the long-term goal is to let everyone get on the bus for free.

In a 2023 interview with INhalton.com, Mayor Marianne Meed Ward said the benefits of a free system would see people get out of their cars reducing traffic congestion and lowering carbon emissions. She suggested then that 2025 could be the target for eliminating fares.

The mayor said initial pilot programs for free rides have shown a 40 per cent increase in ridership.

Past discussions at city hall have indicated that offering free rides could be financially viable and have little impact on the local tax base with offsetting funds coming by way of provincial grants.

The survey will be open until Sept. 15.
