An increase in the number of break-and-enters in Oakville has prompted a warning from police.

“The Halton Regional Police Service is asking residents to be aware and consider implementing safety measures after noting an increase in break-and-enter occurrences to Oakville homes that back onto green space and trail systems,” officers said in a news release Friday.

The break-ins have happened during the daytime and evening hours, but have peaked between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m., police said.

Thieves normally enter through the back door and once they get inside, look for cash, jewelry, and “luxury items,” police added.

“Occasionally, thieves have also utilized ladders to access second-storey windows and balconies,” the release said.

Residents were advised to be vigilant and report any suspicious activity to police.

Officers provided tips for residents to reduce their risk of becoming a victim, including ensuring gates, doors and windows are locked.

Installing a home security system, motion lighting, shatter-proof glass film, and upgraded locks were also among the tips provided.

As well, police said residents should ensure ladders are stored in a “secure location.”

Anyone with information on the break-ins was asked to contact police.
