Terry Fox Run set for this Sunday, Sept. 17 at Coronation Park in Oakville

It’s time to honour Terry Fox’s wish again and continue his Marathon of Hope here in Oakville.

The 43^rd annual Terry Fox run is set for this Sunday (Sept. 17) at Oakville’s Coronation Park.

Registration for the charity event, which raises money for cancer research, starts at 9 a.m. before the run gets underway at 10 a.m.

Participants can walk, run or bike along a beautiful 2k, 5k or 10k lakeside route.

Fox lost his right leg to cancer at the age of 18 and looking to raise awareness and money for cancer research, he began the Marathon of Hope on April 12, 1980.

Fox ran through Oakville back on July 13, 1980, before he was forced to stop in Thunder Bay on Sept. 1 of the same year after his cancer had spread to his lungs.

The 22-year-old Fox would die on June 28,1981. The Terry Fox run has raised more than $850 million dollars in Canada.

“I’ve said to people before that I’m going to do my very best to make it, I’m not going to give up,” Fox would say. “But I might not make it… if I don’t, the Marathon of Hope better continue.”

Canadian Paralympian Tyler McGregor, a captain of the national para ice hockey team, will officially start the run.

McGregor, who lost his leg from bone cancer like Fox, is raising money for cancer research through his own Sledge Skate of Hope along with the Terry Fox Run.

This year’s run will also feature special road signs posted along the park route that honour a friend or family member who has battled can. The ‘In Memory of’ and ‘In Honour of’ signs will cost $5 each.

Terry Fox Run t-shirts are also being sold for $25 each for adult sizes and $20 for youth sizes. All proceeds go to the Terry Fox Foundation.

People will also be able to make donations through Tip Tap machines that will be on site at the park. Donate by simply tapping.

Participants are also reminded to bring their own water bottle and that the Terry Fox Run is plastic water bottle free. They can refill them on site. Compostable cups will also be available.

There is no parking at the park itself.

Due to the annual run, there will be road closures in place from 7 a.m. to noon in the following areas on Sunday.

• Bronte Rd. south of Lakeshore Rd. to Ontario St.;
• Ontario St. from Bronte Rd. to Jones St.;
• Marine Dr. from Bronte Rd. to Jones St.

Running cone lanes:

• Old Lakeshore Rd.:  Belvedere Dr. to Third Line on both sides of the street;
• Marine Dr.: Third Line to East St. on both sides of the street;
• Marine Dr.: East St. to Jones St. on the north side of the street;
• Marine Dr.: Jones St. to Bronte Rd. on the south side of the street;
• Ontario St.: Bronte Rd. to East St. on the south side of the street.
