An Oakville elementary school got into the spirit of giving this holiday season with a car full of socks.

To support those experiencing homelessness, Post’s Corner Public School organized a drive to fill a Smart car with socks, and did they ever.

The school collected about 700 pairs of new socks for Socks for the Streets, a non-profit, primarily volunteer-run organization committed to providing homeless people with warmth, comfort, dignity, mobility and health through new socks.

“People living without a home need to walk to access support and services. Without access to laundry facilities, they may wear the same socks for days until they can be replaced,” said Beth Hudson, principal at Post’s Corners.

“This initiative helps to provide warmth, comfort, mobility and health to Canada’s homeless.”

Hudson applauded the hard work of Educational Assistants Karen Addison and Andrea Chan for organizing this socks-collecting initiative.

“Creating awareness about people who face significant challenges is important, and this is a very real way of helping communities,” said Hudson.

“Our socks drive follows our annual food drive and both initiatives inspire our school community in many ways that make a difference for others.”

Students were happy the school organized this socks drive.

“I want them to feel loved and accepted,” said Grade 5 student Mason.

“We want to share what we have to start a chain of kindness.” said Grade 4 student Quorra.
