A staff member at an Oakville elementary school has tested positive for COVID-19, just days before students are set to return to classrooms.

A staff member at an Oakville elementary school has tested positive for COVID-19, just days before students are set to return to classrooms.

A notice was sent out to parents yesterday from Oodenawi Public School indicating the administrators became aware of the situation on Monday.

In the message to parents, the principal said the infected staff member had taken part in training sessions at the school last week where other people were present. As a result, several other personnel who were also attending the sessions have been ordered to self-isolate for 14 days and contact tracing procedures have been followed.

“We are sharing this information in order to provide transparency regarding the health and safety of our students, staff and families,” the note to parents said adding there was no risk of exposure to students as classes have yet to begin.

The school has subsequently been through advanced cleaning procedures.

Located 385 Sixteen Mile Dr., the school has 1,015 students from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 8.

Students were scheduled to return to classes at Oodenawi on Sept. 14 but that date may have to be pushed back, according to a source at the Halton District School Board.
