‘Slow down’: Operation SafeStart busy ahead of school start next week in Oakville

Operation SafeStart got an early start Thursday morning (Aug. 31) in Oakville.

The sun was barely up and the Halton Regional Police traffic enforcement program already had pulled over a vehicle.

The early morning began at 7 a.m. when police recorded a G2 driver in a rental car allegedly speeding 113 km/hr in a posted 60 km/hr zone.

“(The) driver was stopped and charged with stunt driving,” said Halton Regional Police in a tweet.

The driver also had their license suspended for 30 days and, despite it being a rental vehicle, the car will be impounded for 14 days.

Some 16 hours earlier the enforcement program pulled over another speeding driver with a G2 license.

Police allege the driver in this incident was doing 107 km/hr in a 60 km/zone and then ran a red light before being stopped by police.

The driver of the vehicle will have their licence suspended for 30 days and their car impounded for 14 days, while being summoned to court.

“With less than a week until school starts, all drivers need to slow down and be alert,” police said in a social media post Wednesday afternoon.

The Halton police social media post got one commenter to suggest a different way to travel for the charged driver.

“Uber to school for this (G2) driver,” read the tweet on the X platform.
