The province’s Special Investigations Unit is investigating the circumstances surrounding a vehicle collision that occurred Sunday night (Jan. 24) in Hamilton, resulting in serious injuries to a 44-year-old man.

Based on preliminary information provided by Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), at around 10:30 p.m., police attempted a traffic stop of a white Acura SUV travelling westbound on the QEW.

The vehicle allegedly did not stop, and instead got off the QEW and went into Burlington, leading to OPP notifying Halton Regional Police Service (HRPS).

The SUV travelled westbound on Highway 5 before going north towards Milton and then at some point returned to Highway 5 and continued westbound, according to OPP.

A short time later in east Burlington, Halton Police officers deployed a tire deflation device. The SUV made contact with the device but was still able to proceed west on Highway 5.

Just west of Highway 6, the SUV then made contact with an HRPS cruiser, resulting in the vehicle crashing into a ditch.

The 44-year-old man was transported to hospital with serious injuries.

“Two investigators, two forensic investigators and one collision reconstructionist have been assigned to the case,” according to the official SIU report. “Four subject officers and five witness officers from HRPS have been designated. In addition, one OPP witness officer has been designated.”

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of law enforcement officials that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault, and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person.

All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians.
