Shotguns, handguns, brass knuckles among weapons turned into police in Oakville, Burlington, Milton

A total of 196 firearms and weapons, and 568 pounds of ammunition have been removed from the streets of Burlington, Oakville, Milton, and Halton Hills over the last three months.
Halton Regional Police held a press conference Monday (Oct. 2) to display the results of their Firearms and Weapons Amnesty that provided individuals and businesses residing or operating in the Region an opportunity to surrender unwanted or illegally owned firearms, weapons and/or ammunition to police without the concern of facing criminal charges.
Since June 1 of this year, residents and business owners have turned over numerous firearms, ammunition, and many other weapons. The list of items included:
- 42 Rifles
- 38 Shotguns
- 7 Imitation firearms
- 19 Pellet guns
- 12 Pellet rifles
- 6 Prohibited handguns
- 1 Prohibited rifle
- 9 Restricted handguns
- 568 pounds of ammunition
- 22 Magazines
- 54 Knives, swords, and arrows
- 8 Prohibited weapons (switchblades, butterfly knife, Taser, brass knuckles, etc.)
The amnesty will continue to run indefinitely and police are encouraging residents and business owners to continue to surrender the unwanted or illegal firearms, weapons and ammunition.
In addition to traditional firearms, any weapon that may pose a threat to public safety can also be surrendered under this Amnesty. These items include:
- Imitation firearms and air guns
- Switchblades
- Butterfly knives
- Pepper spray
- Nunchakus (Nun chucks)
- Shurikens (Throwing Stars)
- Push daggers
- Knife combs
- Crossbows
- Spiked wristbands
- Batons
- Blowguns

Residents looking to surrender their firearms and other weapons as part of the amnesty are asked to visit here and complete the online request form. Appointments will be available beginning on June 1st.

Those looking to turn in their weapons or firearms are being reminded not to bring them into a police station, transport them in your vehicle or greet officers at the door with the firearms/weapons.
Officers assigned to retrieve the weapon(s) will provide police identification and will require a signature for destruction.
