Students will soon be heading back to school in Oakville, Burlington and across Halton Region and for many young kids that means boarding a school bus for the first time.
In an effort to make Halton Catholic District School Board and Halton District School Board first-year riders feel more comfortable riding the bus, a First-Time Rider Safety Program is being offered.
Funded by the province and provided by Halton Student Transportation Services (HSTS) and local school bus operators, the program helps parents and their children riding the bus for the first time understand the importance of school bus safety ahead of the first day of school.
The free sessions will feature a classroom presentation on school bus safety, including a special video and demonstration on a school bus.
“School bus company safety officers and bus drivers will talk to the children and their parents about safely getting on and off of the bus, proper behaviour on a school bus, crossing the street to get to a waiting bus and overall school bus safety,” said HSTS. “In addition, a handout will be provided to all young riders with tips on school bus safety.”
