Plans to renovate the old Brantwood Public School got the thumbs up from the Oakville Planning and Development Council on Monday night.
The historic building located at 221 Allan St., which first opened its doors in 1920 and closed in 2010, will undergo extensive renovations that will see it divided into nine condo units while restoring the school’s external features.
The renovation plans by developer Red Pine Canopy Ltd. for the heritage-designated property will also include a two-storey rear addition, underground parking and elevated outdoor amenity space.
Seven new residential units facing Douglas Street will also be constructed.
The Town of Oakville purchased the property from the school board in 2012 and a year later approved a redevelopment plan for the site.
Red Pine Canopy Ltd, owned by developer John Mehlenbacher, purchased the property and property surrounding the school from the town in 2019.
The plan is that once the school project is completed, construction on the seven residential lots facing Douglas St. will begin.
The historic west and south elevations of the school building were constructed in 1920 and designated under Part V of the Ontario Heritage Act.
