Halton police say they have cracked an auto theft ring following raids in Oakville and Orangeville.

During the operation, 25 vehicles were recovered from across Halton Region. Police arrested two men from Quebec.

According to police, the Auto Theft Task Force began investigating a series of stolen vehicles last month which led them to a commercial property in Orangeville where several stolen vehicles were found.

A subsequent investigation into a suspect led them to a home in Oakville where a search was conducted. Two people were arrested at the scene and a search warrant issued for two others.

Charged with motor vehicle theft, trafficking in property contained by crime, and possession of break-in tools are Ali Kirisikoglu (20) and Nicolas St-Jean-Lamothe (26), both of Quebec. They are being held for a bail hearing

Police say they have stepped up investigations into vehicle thefts but add that crime prevention is a shared responsibility. They ask members of the public to call 911 if they see a crime in progress or spot a suspicious person or vehicle in their neighbourhood.

Police also say the public should also take steps to prevent vehicle thefts such as parking in a locked garage, installing a steering wheel lock device, adding a GPS or putting up video cameras.
