Premier Ford leaves door open to build on Burlington greenspace

Ontario Premier Doug Ford says he doesn’t want to build on any more greenspace: But he didn’t say he wouldn’t.

When asked at a press conference in Burlington today (June 21) if he would commit to not allowing homes to be built on greenspace, the premier almost made the promise but allowed himself an out.

“I don’t want to go into greenspace,” Ford said. “I don’t believe we’re going into any more greenspace. In saying that, we have to build homes. Every single person in this room right now at one time (lived on what was once) greenspace…and it got developed. We have to be always environmentally cautious.”

The premier then went on to list a number of environmentally friendly initiatives his government has launched including programs to eliminate fuel consumption and the conversions of factories and workplaces.

He also pointed out that those who live in suburbs still use cars as major means of transportation. He said that is being dealt with.

“You get into the suburbs and 90 per cent of the people drive,” he said. “That’s why we’re investing tens of billions of dollars into electric vehicles”

Ford suggested there are ways to protect the environment without sacrificing progress.

“I believe you can be environmentally friendly and create economic development,” he said.

The City of Burlington has told Queen’s Park to keep its hands off of greenspace including golf courses, parks and the escarpment. Burlington believes there is enough space along the GO Train lines and aging retail plazas that can accommodate growth. The City has committed to building 29,000 more housing units by 2031.
