Popular Burlington Touch-a-Truck event returns this month

Every kid loves to sit in a fire truck. How about a picture in a Zamboni? Or how about getting behind the wheel of a City of Burlington street sweeper?

Local residents and families will get a chance to get a close-up look and more at a variety of vehicles at the City of Burlington’s annual Touch-a-Truck event on May 25, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the Mainway Recreation Centre.

The fun, informative outdoor even gives everyone a personal look at vehicles used by the City in a variety of different departments, including a Burlington Transit Bus, snowplow, fire truck, Zamboni, street sweeper and more.

“We’re looking forward to bringing back our annual Touch-a-Truck celebration to commemorate National Public Works Week,” said Enrico Scalera, Director of Roads, Parks & Forestry for the City of Burlington. “This event is a great way for residents and their families to learn more about how City staff deliver essential services that lead to healthier, happier more vibrant communities.”

Those in attendance can learn what it’s like to operate different vehicles, like a snowplow or backhoe, in a simulator. You will also have a chance to stop by the forestry booth and learn from staff what’s invading Burlington’s trees and ways to improve the health of a tree and a whole lot more.

You can also take a tree home as staff will be giving away a limited number of trees on a first-come, first-serve, basis.

Families will also have the chance to talk to members of the Halton Regional Police Service, Burlington Fire Department and St. John’s Ambulance.

The event will be held rain or shine. In the event of a lightning storm, the event will be cancelled and a notice shared on City of Burlington media channels.

Admission and parking to the event is free.

National Public Works Week (May 19-25) recognizes professionals who serve the community every day.
