Halton police are advising people to be familiar with life-saving techniques for babies and small children following a terrifying ordeal in Halton Hills.

Police said that last week, an officer performed life-saving CPR on an unresponsive 16-month-old baby.

“These terrifying moments can happen to any family, at any time. Everyone, not just parents, should be ready to jump into action,” police said on X.

A police spokesperson told halton.insauga.com that while they couldn’t provide additional details regarding the circumstances of the incident, they could confirm the child was doing well now.

According to the American Red Cross, performing CPR on a child or baby is different from performing CPR on an adult. When performing CPR on a baby, the Red Cross advises the person to place both thumbs (side-by-side) on the center of the baby’s chest, just below the nipple line and use the other fingers to encircle the baby’s chest toward the back, providing support.

After that, the person should, using both thumbs at the same time, push hard down and fast about 1.5 inches at a rate of 100 to 120 per minute and allow the chest to return to its normal position after each compression.

The baby should be placed on a firm, flat surface during CPR.

The Red Cross advises blowing into the baby’s mouth for one second, ensuring each breath makes the chest rise.

Anyone who is with a baby or child experiencing a life-threatening emergency should call 911.
