The change of seasons is upon us but Burlington’s summer sidewalk patios are still up and running.

Until the end of October, pedestrian detours will stay open to accommodate the patios that are still in operation for bars and restaurants on local sidewalks.

The detours flow onto roads in some parts of the city — mostly downtown — but they are protected by traffic barriers.

Here is where the pedestrian detours are located:

  • The north side of Lakeshore Road between Brant Street and John Street
  • The north side of Lakeshore Road between Locust Street and Brant Street
  • The west side of Brant Street, north of Lakeshore Road
  • The north side of Pine Street between Elizabeth Street and Pearl Street
  • The east side of John Street between Pine Street and Lakeshore Road
  • The north side of Elgin Street between Locust Street and Brant Street

A spokesperson for the City of Burlington said the patio program is important for the viability of local businesses especially since many are still recovering from the pandemic.

“The summer months are key for these businesses to make up for lost time,” the spokesperson said adding the detours are carefully planned so that those who are on foot can be kept safe.
