A truck driver bypassing the scales on the QEW in Oakville with an overweight truck and damaged tie-downs Thursday afternoon is facing a slew of charges.

The truck, weighing in at 83,000 kgs with no overweight permits for regional and town roads, was spotted on Speers Road and hauled in for a closer look by Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance inspectors.

Halton Police say the truck was overweight on its registered gross, maximum allowable, axles and tires; had damaged and insufficient number of tie-downs and a crack in the gooseneck frame.

The load securement, police added, was also more than eight tonnes short of its required aggregate working load limit. The driver’s cargo was offloaded, the truck was put out of service and both the driver and the trucking company now face multiple charges.

“Shortcuts don’t work,” was the terse message from police.
