Work has started on a major project expected to ease traffic flow through a congested area along the Burlington and Oakville border.

The construction, which will occur along the Lakeshore West GO Line, will eventually create a train overpass over Burloak Dr.

The work is being carried out by Metrolinx.

The project will also ultimately allow the expansion of Burloak to six lanes as well as create improvements to nearby routes such as Wyecroft Rd., Harvester Rd., Superior Crt. and Prince William Dr.

Upgrades to the pedestrian bridge on Drury Lane will also be carried out.

And the work is not only good news for motorists the regularly use the area. Metrolinx says the project will also provide the opportunity to electrify the train lines, which will allow for more frequent train service.

The process could be a long one, however. Work can only be carried out when trains aren’t running, so there could be frequent disruptions to GO service along the route. This will begin with the first train disruption on July 7.

Also, a full closure will need to occur on Burloak at some point and could last for more than a year once it begins. The date for that phase of the project has not yet been determined.

The City of Burlington and the Town of Oakville have also committed funds to the project.
