The opening of the reconverted Skyway Community Centre is several months behind schedule but work at the site continues.
Located on Kenwood Avenue in the southeast area of the city, the $40 million structure is expected to be a hub of community activity when it opens and feature an NHL-sized ice pad with seating, six change rooms complete with washrooms and showers, multi-house program areas with kitchens, and a three-lane indoor walking track among several other amenities.
It replaces the old Skyway Arena which was considered outdated in terms of equipment and community needs.
Originally scheduled to open around this time, the construction project has faced delays mostly due to weather conditions and is now expected to open in the spring of 2025.
As well as what is happening indoors, outdoors at the site will also have a refreshed look.
The surrounding park will see a new baseball diamond with dugouts and seating, accessible pathways, a children’s play area and washrooms.
To see how far the project has come, a time-lapse video shows each stage of construction starting in January of 2023 when it was a dirt field right up until this week which shows an almost finished product.
