Oakville’s Laughton could be on the move from the Philadelphia Flyers

Could Oakville native Scott Laughton soon be a member of the Toronto Maple Leafs or Ottawa Senators?

According to Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman, several teams discussed trading for Laughton with Philadelphia Flyers GM Daniel Briere at Saturday’s NHL Scouting Combine in Buffalo.

The 29-year-old has played 10 seasons with the Flyers and is coming off his best year in the NHL with 18 goals and 25 assist for 43 points in 78 games.

A strong two-way centre, Laughton is signed for three more years at a very reasonable price of $3M a season.

Briere, who was hired by the Flyers a short while ago, appears to be in a rebuilding mode after trading away veteran blueliner Ivan Proverov in a three-way trade and is also believed to be shopping franchise goaltender Carter Hart.

The forward would be a perfect fit in Ottawa or Toronto where the it appears the Leafs will unlikely be able to bring back centre Ryan O’Reilly.

“I think the Flyers believe this. They’re turning their team over,” said Friedman Saturday on Hockey Night in Canada. “They’re going to have a lot of young players. You need good veterans around them.

“In a perfect world I think they’d like to keep Laughton, but,  and this a but, if they get the right price they’ll consider it. I just heard there’s been a lot of teams calling about him, and like Ted DiBiase said, the Million Dollar Man, everybody’s got a price.”

A strong penalty killer, the Oakville native was a 20th overall pick by Philadelphia in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft. He has collected 82 goals and 199 points in 519 NHL games.
