The lights went out Saturday night (March 25) and that’s just fine for Oakville Hydro.
The local power hub reports the town did its fair share during this year’s Earth Hour, saving approximately 11.3MWh of electricity between 8:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m.
According to Oakville Hydro, that’s equivalent to turning off about 750,000 15-watt light bulbs for one hour.
“Earth Hour is an annual reminder of the vital importance of caring for our planet,” said Scott Mudie, EVP, Chief Energy Transformation Officer at Oakville Hydro. “The movement and mission created by Earth Hour has expanded in 2023 to include encouraging positive actions for earth, which is a theme we encourage throughout the year.
“Together, even the smallest sustainable action adds up to make a significant difference. Thank you to the community for their continued efforts.”
The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) switched on Earth Hour back in 2007 with a lights-off event in Sydney, Australia.
Since then it has grown into a worldwide movement for the planet with more than 7,000 cities and towns across the world taking part in the one-hour event.
It has become a vital part of the larger movement of stopping climate change.
