A popular Oakville girls hockey tournament this weekend has been iced due to the growing concerns over the spread of COVID-19.

The cancellation of the Oakville Harvest Classic Tournament was announced Wednesday afternoon by the Oakville Hornets Girls Hockey Association.

The annual tournament features 144 teams from ages U11 to U18 and was scheduled to begin Thursday (Dec. 16) and run through to Sunday (Dec. 19) at various rinks across town.

“Due to the increase in COVID cases in Ontario, and in the interest of keeping our (Ontario Women’s Hockey Association) players, coaches and families safe, the Oakville Hornets Board of Directors, with the support of OWHA and the Town of Oakville, have cancelled the Oakville Harvest Classic tournament, scheduled for Dec 16 – 19th,” the Hornets said on their website.

“A full refund will be provided to each of the registered teams, less the processing fee. We look forward to hosting the Harvest Classic tournament in the 2022-23 season.”

Parent Steve Clark couldn’t hide his disappointment that another fun weekend planned for his daughter was no more. His daughter, Isla, plays with the Flamborough Falcons U11BB team and had been entered into the tournament.

“My daughter was looking forward to this tournament for a while, given this is the third tournament they’ve had cancelled so far for her team this season,” Clark told inhalton.

“It looked like a great tournament. She told my wife and I that she felt sad for all of her teammates because they can’t play this weekend.”
