An Oakville Catholic school board trustee is facing a dozen fraud charges related to her former job as an administrator with a large healthcare union.

Hamilton Police confirmed that Nancy Guzzo is facing 10 counts of fraud under $5,000 and two counts of fraud over $5,000 in connection with an investigation probing her actions while with LIUNA, a North American-wide union with some 500,000 members, including 80,000 in Canada.

Guzzo, elected in 2018 as one of three Oakville trustees at the Halton Catholic District School Board, was charged by police on Jan. 21.

Her LinkedIn profile shows she was assistant business manager for LIUNA Local 3000 (based in Burlington) from March 2018 to April 2019 and, prior to that, business manager and secretary-treasurer for Hamilton-based LIUNA Local 1110 from June 2000 to March 2018.

Guzzo continues to serve as school board trustee in Oakville.

Halton Catholic District School Board Chair Patrick Murphy said this afternoon (Oct. 13) that Guzzo’s pending legal matter is “before the courts and…outside the business of the Board.”

He added that, under Ontario’s Education Act, a sitting trustee who’s facing charges is eligible to continue performing their school board duties and would only be removed if they’re convicted.

Guzzo’s LinkedIn profile also notes she started Food4Kids Mississauga in April 2018, and the not-for-profit organization’s website lists her as founding board member and vice-president.

In a statement today (Oct. 13), Food4Kids Mississauga said it “has become aware of the allegations made against Nancy Guzzo by LIUNA, her previous employer of 20 years. We will continue to monitor this case to ensure that the best interests of our children and families are protected.”

Food4Kids Mississauga provides packages of healthy food for kids aged 4-13 with limited or no access to food each weekend. The food packages are assembled by volunteers and delivered to schools each Friday to ensure children have nourishment over the weekend.

The Laborers’ International Union of North America is an American and Canadian labour union formed in 1903. LIUNA represents employees in healthcare, industrial and professional services.
