New traffic calming zones should improve safety in Milton, Oakville, Burlington

Several Regional roads are in line to have portions of them designated as Community Safety Zones.

These 17 proposed locations are near sensitive land uses that would benefit from a Community Safety Zone designation based on the speed, volume, and collision data analyzed as part of the screening, according to a report presented to Halton Region council today, July 12.

All of the proposed road segments are in close proximity to schools except for one, which is located in close proximity to a hospital.

“Adopting 17 new Region-wide Community Safety Zones will serve to benefit many vulnerable road users by ensuring motorists comply with the posted speed, which in turn will increase road safety by deterring motorists aggressive driving behaviours and potentially reducing the risk of major injury.”

The study identifying these 17 sections was conducted in June 2021. Implementation will begin this year and those areas of roads are also now eligible to have speed cameras installed.

Four of the new zones are in Burlington, two in Halton Hills, one in Milton and 10 in Oakville.
