School bomb threat in Mississauga nets charges for 15-year-old boy

A major hurdle has been cleared to bring a new high school to Oakville.

Earlier this week, the Town of Oakville’s planning committee gave zoning approval for the project which is expected to be fully approved next week at a full meeting of council.

The school, part of the Halton District School Board system, will be located at Burnhamthorpe Rd. W. and Sixth Line and when completed will be the first high school to serve students living in the most northern section of Oakville.

The yet-to-be-named school was previously set to be built near Neyagawa Blvd. and Dundas St W. but those plans were scuttled when it was discovered a nearby radio tower would likely interfere with electronics at the school.

With all approvals forthcoming, construction on the school is expected to begin soon and be ready for students in time for the 2026-27 school year.

Once built, the structure will be three floors with 53 classrooms, 18 portables, a sports field, daycare and parking for 200 vehicles. Initially, the school can accommodate 1,200 students.

Full funding for the $33.6 million school has been granted by Ontario’s Ministry of Education.

The project is news to both local officials and the community who believe the burgeoning population in the town’s northside has been underserved.

“We’ve been waiting a long time for this,” said Manet Raj who lives near where the school will be built. “It’s good to know that our kids will have a school nearby. I’m glad all the parties have come together to make this happen.”
