NBA star wants his $8 million returned after Burlington mansion purchase

Basketball star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander doesn’t want his $8.4 million Burlington mansion anymore.

The Toronto-born, Hamilton-raised player with the Oklahoma Thunder of the National Basketball Association was upset that people were showing up at the lakefront home looking to get even with a former tenant.

That tenant was self-proclaimed ‘Crypto King’ Aiden Pleterski who has been at the centre of an investigation involving the disappearance of $40 million in investor money. Pleterski lived in the home for parts of 2022.

Those who invested with Pleterski learned through bankruptcy hearings that most of the money never went into the cryptocurrency market and instead was used for personal luxury items.

When strangers looking for Pleterski started to show up at Gilgeous-Alexander’s new home, he found that previous tenants also received angry visits from those looking for the Crypto King.

Gilgeous-Alexander and his girlfriend are suing to get their money back claiming that the house’s history should have been disclosed to them. The company involved in the sale has denied any wrongdoing.

The CBC has been investigating the Pleterski case for more than a year which has included a search for the whereabouts of the investor funds as well as looking into the alleged kidnapping of Pleterski. The CBC  found that Pleterski had been living a jet-setting lifestyle paying $45,000 a month to live in the Burlington home while stocking it with luxury vehicles and taking exotic vacations.

It is believed that Gilgeous-Alexander has since moved out of the house.
