Milton wants help getting rid of noisy vehicles

It’s not a problem that can be solved at the municipal level, so Milton council is reaching up the political ladder to help curb noisy vehicles.

The motion was introduced at this week’s council meeting by Ward 2 Town councillor John Challinor II.

The motion asks Milton Mayor Gord Krantz to communicate with Federal Transport Minister, Omar Alghabra and Ontario Minister of Transportation Caroline Mulroney, requesting both give consideration to revising their respective related legislation.

Currently the maximum noise level is 96 decibels for all vehicles and council wants it to be 85 dB, along with an increased fine for disobeying the regulations.

“Halton Regional Police Services and other police forces in Ontario and across Canada are hard-pressed, for practical reasons, to effectively deal with drivers of most automobiles and motorcycles who are exceeding municipal, provincial and federal vehicle noise limits,” says the motion.

According to the motion, Health Canada and a number of provincial jurisdictions, including Ontario, do not permit workplace maximum noise levels to exceed 85 dB and advise that hearing loss can begin to occur at 70 dB,
