Collyn Gagne of Milton captured a silver medal in the pool Tuesday at the 400-metre Individual Medley event at the Pan Am Games in Santiago, Chile.

Gagne, a two-time Canadian swimming trials champion and the NCAA-II record holder in the event, swam a personal best 4:17.05 in his favourite event Tuesday, beaten only by the gold medal swim of Jay Litherland of the USA.

Gagne won his heat earlier in the day, with Canadian teammate Ben Cote of Calgary second. Cote finished seventh in the final.

The 22 year-old swimmer set the NCAA Division II record in the 400 IM while at Simon Fraser University and was a finalist at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England last year in the 400 IM and 11th in the 200 IM.

Gagne was 14th at the World Swimming Championships in July.
