Milton residents asked for input about long-term future of Main Street

There’s only a few weeks left for Milton residents to have their say about the future of Main St. E.

“In the Town of Milton, Main Street East connects the community and cultural arts district in the east to historic downtown Milton in the west,” said a Town spokesperson.

“It is envisioned as a landmark street and a central focus in our community.”

The Milton GO Station is a significant asset on the road and it will be the hub of transit-oriented design in the decades ahead.

“To prepare for this, in 2020, the Town of Milton completed a Mobility Hub Study with key recommendations to transform the Milton GO Station district into Uptown: The Hub of Possibility.”

Last year, Milton Council approved policies to deliberately manage Uptown’s growth and the development of buildings, homes, businesses, roads, sidewalks and public spaces in the area.

The policy solutions include details like building heights, density, land use, parking, urban design and open space.

A series of key opportunities for Main Street East have been identified:

• Transition from an automobile-oriented street to a green corridor, supporting seamless movement between all modes of transportation and placing special priority on accessibility and safety
• Enhance the public realm along Main Street East through widened sidewalks, cycling infrastructure and active building frontages
• Serve as a green corridor prioritizing cyclists and pedestrians
• Create more welcoming and functional spaces
• Reimagining Main Street East will establish the principles and components to guide the collective vision, future design and reconstruction of the Main St. E. corridor between Ontario St. and Thompson Rd.
