Milton councillor wants Province to update tax assessment data

A Milton councillor is reaching out to the provincial government in a effort to update the property tax assessment system.

Specifically, the Ontario Government is being asked to direct the Municipal Property Assessment Corporation (MPAC) to conduct a province-wide assessment update based on a Jan. 1, 2024, valuation date for utilization for a four-year cycle, beginning with the 2025 taxation year.

Earlier this year, the Province announced the 2020 assessment update had been postponed, meaning property assessments for the 2021, 2022 and 2023 taxation years would continue to be based on the fully phased-in Jan. 1, 2016, current values.

The motion, which passed unanimously at a recent Town Council meeting, was put forward by Ward 2 Town councillor John Challinor II, seconded by Ward 1 Regional Councillor Colin Best, who also serves as President of the Association of Municipalities of Ontario.

“Given that an up-to-date property tax assessment system is critical to ensuring that the province of Ontario remains competitive and local municipal services and education are properly funded, we have asked the Government of Ontario to request MPAC to undertake an update,” said Challinor.
