Man suspected of seriously injuring cop in Burlington still at large, wanted on additional charges

Halton police say a suspect accused of seriously injuring a police officer during a traffic stop in Burlington is still at large and wanted in connection with several additional charges. 

Today (Oct. 31), police said Matthew Flannigan is facing new charges, including unauthorized possession of a firearm, unauthorized possession of a prohibited device and other gun-related offences. 

The incident involving the officer occurred during a traffic stop on Plains Rd. E. in the early morning hours of Saturday, July 22, when the officer attempted to arrest the 31-year-old man on drug charges.

“A violent struggle with (the man) ensued, resulting in the officer sustaining serious but non-life-threatening injuries,” said police.

Police say he fled the area at a high rate of speed. The suspect was last seen driving a blue 2021 Honda CRV with a licence plate number of CVFS 405.

The officer was transported to hospital and has since been released.

“If seen, do not approach Flannigan and contact police immediately,” said Halton police in a news release in August. 

A warrant was previously issued for the suspect on charges of possession of a substance for the purpose of trafficking, assaulting a peace officer causing bodily harm, flight from a peace officer and dangerous operation.

The accused is described as a white male who is five-foot-nine inches tall and has brown braided hair.

The HRPS is offering a cash reward for any information leading to his arrest.
