A residential fire in Milton Monday afternoon is believed to have been caused by a rare November bolt of lightning.

Milton Fire and Rescue were called to Speyer Crescent near Derry Road and Bronte Street at 3:30 p.m. Monday to deal with the blaze, which started on the roof and spread through to the upper floor. The fire began shortly after a thunderstorm passed through the area and a large hole in the roof was identified by fire crews.

Milton firefighters quickly contained the blaze and were on hand until the evening ensuring the fire was fully extinguished.

The townhouse has a metal television antenna on the roof – a rare sight in town.
