Landmark furniture shop in downtown Oakville closing for good

A downtown Oakville landmark is closing its doors for good.
Swiss Interiors, which first opened in 1953, announced it will be holding its “largest and last sale” beginning Sept. 20.
“We are both sad and excited to announce that Swiss Interiors will soon be closing forever,” said owner Carol Vesters on the furniture store’s website. “Along with clearing floor models, custom orders will be welcomed for the first portion of the sale.”
Owned and operated by the same family for 70 years, Sam and Betty Muller opened the store as a small re-upholstery shop after coming to Canada from Switzerland.
The name Swiss Interiors came about because both the founders immigrated from Switzerland.
While the storefront was always located in downtown Oakville, the store was initially located on Church St. and later moved to what is now Lakeshore Rd. E. (known in the 1960s as Colborne St.).
Recognizing a need for quality furniture, Sam and Betty would turn the store into a furniture showroom and began selling mostly Canadian made furniture.
Now run by Vesters, the store is spread over four floors and showcases recognizable top brand names in both traditional and transitional styles.
The Oakville landmark with the recognizable stonewall storefront was once featured in the Disney movie The Santa Clause, starring comedian Tim Allen.
Announcement of the store’s closing on its Facebook page came as a surprise to many.
“Wow! That’s surprising news, but we wish you all the best in your next chapter,” said Colleen Broderick.
“All the best, you two,” said Jacqui McKinney. “Thanks for being amazing people and keeping a little piece of Oakville alive for so long. You’ve made your parents proud.”
Swiss Interiors is located at 217 Lakeshore Rd. E. Sale hours will be Wednesdays to Saturdays from 10 to 6 p.m. and Sundays from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m.
