What is the current population of Oakville? And what do the numbers reveal?

Former mayor Harry Barrett once called Oakville a city that calls itself a town and acts like a village.

With a current population of 231,000 and over 73,000 households, Oakville is now far from a small village, but how do today’s statistics compute if it was just a small village?

A fun graphic put together by the Town of Oakville shows what those numbers would be if we were a village of just 100 people.

The statistics are taken from the 2023 Town of Oakville, 2021 Census and the 2017 Canadian Survey on Disability.

Today’s numbers show that Oakville’s population is 52 per cent female and 48 per cent male. Our household income median is $128,000 and average $180,000, while out individual income median is $47,000 and $82,000 on average.

Now how do those numbers relate if we were just a small village of 100 people?

A total of 42 per cent of Oakville residents would belong to a visible minority with 41 per cent of the people having immigrated here.

Some 59 per cent of the people in town would live in houses, with 50 per cent being married or in a common-law arrangement. There would be 40 per cent of those homes with children living at home.

An impressive 68 per cent of the people in the small village would have a post-secondary education and 65 per cent in the labour force.

The labour force would be made of 18 people working in business, finance and administration, 17 people in sales and service, 10 people in nature and applied science and eight in education, law and government.

Seven per cent of those living here would commute by public transit. A total of 22 per cent of the Oakville villagers would have a disability.

Voting would still be in low numbers, with only 28 per cent of the population voting in the last municipal election.

As for the largest age group, topping the list would be 16 kids ages 10 to 19. The 40 to 49 and 50 to 59 age groups are just behind with 15 residents each.

Eleven people each would come from the age groups of 20 to 29, 30 to 39 and 60 to 69.

Young children from newborns up to the age of nine would include 10 people.

As for seniors, seven people would be from the 70 to 79 age group and four from the 80 and over age group.
