Metrolinx says Milton commuters who rely on the GO Train to get to Toronto’s Union Station have some options if a strike disrupts service.
The transit agency says it has been preparing in the event of a work stoppage caused by the ongoing labour dispute between Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC) and workers represented by Teamsters Canada Rail Conference (TCRC).
If a strike occurs, it will begin Thursday (Aug. 22) and will affect rush hour passengers who use the line that runs from Milton to Union Station with stops in Mississauga.
The Milton line is affected because of tracks shared with CPKC.
The Hamiton GO station will also not operate if there is a strike.
All other GO services and train stations (including West Harbour in Hamilton and other Lakeshore West stations), as well as the UP Express, will not be affected by a work stoppage.
“We are sorry for any inconvenience this may cause and we’re here to help. We have planned plenty of options for you to consider, including the Lakeshore West or Kitchener lines – which will both be offering regular service and stations with parking capacity,” reads a statement on the GO Transit website.
The alternatives are lengthy and complex but here is the breakdown:
- Travel south to Bronte GO and use the Lakeshore West line. Estimated total journey time to Union Station is 90 minutes.
- Travel north to Bramalea GO and use the Kitchener line. Estimated total journey time to Union Station is 90 minutes.
- Take GO Bus Route 22 to Oakville GO to connect with the Lakeshore West line. Estimated total journey time to Union Station is 1 hour, 45 minutes.
- Take GO Bus Route 27A to Yorkdale to use the TTC. Estimated total journey time to Union Station is 2 hours.
