Hudson’s Bay store to close in Burlington

Hudson’s Bay Company is closing one of its Burlington stores.

The Hudson’s Bay store in Burlington Centre, 777 Guelph Line, is closing in June 2024, a Hudson’s Bay Company (HBC) spokesperson tells inHalton. Burlington’s Hudson’s Bay Company store in Mapleview Centre will remain open.

“HBC continually looks at opportunities to optimize its real estate portfolio,” a statement from the company reads. “Given the proximity of Burlington Centre just 3.5 kms to Mapleview Mall, Hudson’s Bay has made the decision to close its Burlington Centre location in June 2024.”

Burlington’s population, at just over 200,000 people, and the changing market appear to be behind the decision.

“While these decisions are difficult they are the right ones for our business, reflecting market changes and our vision for the future,” the spokesperson said.

It appears at least some of the staff will be moved to other locations.

“We are committed to treating every associate with respect and fairness through this process, and transfer opportunities will be explored where feasible,” the spokesperson said.

The Burlington Centre location was one of a handful selected for an in-store Zellers shop last year.

But the Burlington Centre Zellers will move to the Hudson’s Bay store at the Bramalea City Centre in Brampton.

And a Zellers pop-up will open in the Hudson’s Bay store at Burlington’s Mapleview Centre, 900 Maple Ave., this summer.

Burlington Centre (formerly known as Burlington Mall) opened in 1968. Simpson-Sears was the original anchor store for the mall but it sold its store lease and fixtures to The Bay in 1991.
