A handful of homes in Burlington, Milton, Oakville and Halton Hills should expect some big changes to the way their garbage is picked up beginning this fall.

A total of eight neighbourhoods in Halton – three in Oakville, two in Milton and Burlington and one in Georgetown – are part of an automated waste collection pilot program.

About 1,800 single-family households in urban and rural areas across Halton will be affected.

Officials believe the automated wheeled cart collection program for garbage and recycling is safer and more cost-effective.

The program has already been implemented in other GTA municipalities, including Mississauga and Brampton.

According to the staff report presented at a recent regional council meeting, neighbourhoods chosen to be part of the pilot project are primarily single-family dwellings with small lots, long driveways and potential curb space and storage limitations (such as townhouse complexes or new builds).

Here is the schedule for the rollout of the program:

  • June: informing selected households
  • September: holding public information centres
  • September/October: delivering wheeled carts and information kits
  • October: commencing automated collection service
  • Next year: reporting program results to council and recommendation for next steps

On the scheduled last day of manual Blue Box collection prior to the start of automated collection, selected households will receive a blue wheeled cart for the placement and collection of recyclable material.

On the last scheduled day for the collection of garbage, selected households will receive a black wheeled cart for garbage material.
