Georgetown, Halton Hills was faced with quite a surprise at the beginning of the new year.

Georgetown, Halton Hills was faced with quite a surprise at the beginning of the new year.

According to a recent news release, the independent operator of the local ServiceOntario office that is located in the area will be closing its doors.

This news came as a shock to Mayor Rick Bonnette.

“This is not good for our residents but at the same time, I sympathize with the owner for making this difficult business decision,” Bonnette said in the news release.

The current operator of the ServiceOntario Georgetown location hasn’t an increase in compensation in years, but his fixed costs have continued to increase over the nine years he has operated the site.

The province is expected to be issuing a request for a new operator, however, residents may still see a gap in service.

“We don’t know the timeline,” Bonnette said in the news release.

“But I am encouraged that the Province understands the need for the Halton Hills community to have access to its own ServiceOntario office.”

The ServiceOntario office in Georgetown will be closed as of Feb. 15.

After this date, residents requiring driver license renewals, plates, OHIP cards or other related services will have to look online or visit another ServiceOntario office.

The closest locations to Georgetown are Milton and Brampton.

According to the news release, Bonnette suggested that he will be writing to the Minister of Government and Consumer Services and Ted Arnott, MPP, Wellington-Halton Hills to express his concerns.
