Here’s How Burlington is Recognizing Pride Month

The month of June is widely recognized as Pride Month – a month that celebrates the LGBTQ2+ community and honours the Stonewall riots in New York City.

The month of June is widely recognized as Pride Month – a month that celebrates the LGBTQ2+ community and honours the Stonewall riots in New York City. During the riots, according to a recent CBC article, police raided Stonewall Inn – a gay bar in Greenwich Village, in 1969, and violent demonstrations broke out.

The city of Burlington, according to a recent press release, is recognizing Pride Month in a few different ways.

On June 3, 2019, Deputy Mayor and Ward 6 Councillor Angelo Bentivegna read the proclamation and helped raise the Pride Flag at Civic Square, according to the release. 

“I am pleased that Burlington is a leader in safe, welcoming and inclusive communities,” Bentivegna said in a statement. “We all have a right to love and to be accepted.”

The Honourable Karina Gould, MP Burlington, Minister of Democratic Institutions’ office, and Pam Damoff, MP Oakville North-Burlington’s office, also assisted.

In addition to raising the pride flag over city hall, on June 23, 2019, the pier will be lit up with rainbow-coloured lights.
