A Halton police officer is facing theft charges involving property from an Oakville home.
Police Chief Steve Tanner says he’s “saddened, both personally and on behalf of the over 1,000 dedicated members of the HRPS, that this incident has taken place.”
The officer was arrested and charged on Feb. 13 after allegedly stealing property during a break-and-enter investigation in Dec. 2017.
“As a service we are committed to dealing with this situation both thoroughly and transparently,” Tanner said.
Const. Michael Kellas, 29, is charged with theft of credit card, possession/use of stolen credit card, and possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000.
Kellas has served with Halton police since August 2010.
He’s been suspended from duty with pay, as is standard under the Police Services Act of Ontario.
Kellas is scheduled to appear in Milton court on March 5.
The investigation is ongoing.
